The Schedule and Purpose of Mid-Term Exams 

CBSE schools across India have begun conducting mid-term exams—also referred to as half-yearly exams—from September 15 to September 30, 2025. These exams provide students in Classes 9 through 12 a vital opportunity to prepare for board examinations, refine their exam strategies, and receive feedback on their academic progress. With official date sheets now released by schools, students and teachers are busy revising, focusing on conceptual understanding and practical application over rote memorization. 

Key Reforms: Attendance and Assessment Changes 

This year, significant reforms have come into force alongside the mid-term exams. Students now face a mandatory 75% attendance requirement across the academic year—emphasizing the importance of regular participation and classroom engagement. Internal assessments, including projects, assignments, and in-class tests, now account for 40% of final board exam marks, shifting focus toward competency-based learning and continuous evaluation instead of high-pressure final exams. Athletes and Olympiad participants are given provision for alternative exam dates in case of schedule conflicts, ensuring equal opportunities for all. 

Cutting-Edge Security: Biometric, CCTV, and Data Integrity 

To further strengthen exam integrity, CBSE has implemented several cutting-edge security protocols for both mid-term and board examinations. All exam centers are required to install CCTV cameras throughout the premises, providing real-time visual records and deterring malpractice. Biometric authentication, including fingerprinting and face matching, is being used in key centers to verify student identity and make impersonation impossible. The board also released strict guidelines for accurate submission of the List of Candidates (LOC), ensuring data precision from schools and reducing administrative errors. 

Logistical Preparations and Impact 

With over 44 lakh expected board exam candidates, logistical preparation is more critical than ever. CBSE, in collaboration with local authorities, is expanding exam infrastructure and training staff to manage security systems and large candidate volumes. Educators are adapting their strategies to accommodate continuous assessments and foster a calm, focused exam environment, minimizing stress from heightened scrutiny and surveillance.
